How to Remove “/Pages” from Your Shopify Store’s URL

If you’ve created custom pages like About Us, Contact, FAQs, or Privacy Policy in Shopify, you might have noticed that Shopify automatically adds "/pages" to the URL structure.

For example:
✅ Default Shopify URL: yourstore.com/pages/about-us
❌ What you want: yourstore.com/about-us

Many store owners find this extra "/pages" unnecessary and want cleaner URLs for branding and SEO purposes.

🔍 Can You Completely Remove "/Pages" in Shopify?

Unfortunately, Shopify does not allow you to modify its default URL structure. Unlike WordPress or custom-coded websites, Shopify enforces a structured system for its URLs:

  • /products/ → Product pages

  • /collections/ → Collections pages

  • /blogs/ → Blog posts

  • /pages/ → Custom pages

However, there are workarounds that can help you achieve cleaner URLs and ensure a seamless experience for your customers. Let's go through them one by one.

✅ Solution 1: Use URL Redirects (Best & Easiest Option)

Since you cannot remove "/pages", the best way to make your URLs look clean is by setting up 301 redirects in Shopify. A 301 redirect automatically forwards visitors from one URL to another without them noticing.

📌 How to Set Up URL Redirects in Shopify

1️⃣ Log in to your Shopify admin panel
2️⃣ Go to "Settings" > "Navigation"
3️⃣ Click on "View URL Redirects"
4️⃣ Click "Create URL Redirect"
5️⃣ In the "Redirect from" field, enter the cleaner URL (/about-us)
6️⃣ In the "Redirect to" field, enter the full Shopify URL (/pages/about-us)
7️⃣ Click "Save"

🎯 How This Helps:

  • When customers type yourstore.com/about-us, they will be redirected to yourstore.com/pages/about-us automatically.

  • This keeps your branding clean and makes links more shareable.

  • Works well for marketing campaigns, ads, and social media posts.

💡 Note: Shopify does not allow redirecting URLs that already exist, so you can’t redirect "/pages/about-us" to just "/about-us" directly. This method only creates an alternative clean URL.

✅ Solution 2: Use a Custom Domain & Subdomains (Advanced Option)

Another way to avoid showing "/pages" in your URLs is to use subdomains. Instead of using "/pages", you can create a subdomain like:

👉 about.yourstore.com (for "About Us" page)
👉 faq.yourstore.com (for FAQs)

📌 How to Set Up a Subdomain in Shopify

1️⃣ Go to your domain provider's DNS settings (like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Cloudflare)
2️⃣ Find the "Subdomain" or "CNAME" settings
3️⃣ Create a new CNAME record for your subdomain (e.g., "about")
4️⃣ Point it to your Shopify store’s domain
5️⃣ Save the changes and wait for propagation (can take up to 24 hours)

🎯 How This Helps:

  • Makes URLs shorter and cleaner

  • Gives a more professional look (especially for landing pages)

  • Avoids Shopify’s default URL structure completely

💡 Downside: This requires technical knowledge and may not be ideal for beginners.

✅ Solution 3: Use Shopify’s Navigation System to Hide URLs

While you can’t remove "/pages" in the URL bar, you can prevent customers from seeing it on your website.

📌 How to Do It:

1️⃣ Go to Shopify Admin > Online Store > Navigation
2️⃣ Find your Main Menu and Footer Menu
3️⃣ Edit the link text (e.g., "About Us" instead of "About Us - /pages/about-us")
4️⃣ Save changes

🎯 How This Helps:

  • Customers will only see "About Us" in the navigation, not the full URL.

  • Looks more professional on your store.

💡 Downside: This doesn’t affect search engines or shared links – the "/pages" will still appear when someone visits the page.

✅ Solution 4: Use Link Shorteners for External Sharing

If you’re sharing links on social media, ads, or emails, you can use a URL shortener like:

📌 How to Do It:

1️⃣ Copy the Shopify page URL (yourstore.com/pages/about-us)
2️⃣ Go to Bit.ly or any URL shortener
3️⃣ Paste your link and generate a shorter version (e.g., bit.ly/aboutus)
4️⃣ Use this link for marketing, ads, and social media

🎯 How This Helps:

  • Avoids displaying "/pages" in external marketing

  • Looks cleaner and more shareable

  • Allows you to track clicks and performance

💡 Downside: Only works for shared links – it won’t change URLs within your Shopify store.

✅ Solution 5: Custom Shopify Development (For Advanced Users)

If you are comfortable with coding or have a Shopify Plus plan, you can try advanced methods like:

1️⃣ Editing Shopify’s Liquid theme files
2️⃣ Using JavaScript-based redirects (not SEO-friendly)
3️⃣ Building a custom app to handle URL rewriting

💡 Note: This requires developer-level knowledge and may not be worth the effort unless you have a large store.

💡 For most store owners, the best option is using Shopify’s built-in URL redirects. It’s simple, effective, and works for branding & SEO.

Until Shopify allows full URL customization, these workarounds will help make your store’s URLs look cleaner and more professional.

Shopify’s URL structure includes “/pages” by default, and while there’s no direct way to remove it, workarounds like redirects and smart navigation choices can help create a cleaner look.
